Traditional Medium

Hark! The herald angels sing,
"Glory to the newborn King!
Peace on earth and mercy mild,
God and sinners reconciled."
Joyful, all ye nations rise,
Join the triumph of the skies;
With the angelic host proclaim:
"Christ is born in Bethlehem."

Chorus
Hark! The herald angels sing,
"Glory to the newborn King!"

Christ, by highest heaven adored,
Christ, the everlasting Lord!
Late in time behold Him come,
Offspring of a Virgin's womb.
Veiled in flesh the Godhead see,
Hail the incarnate Deity,
Pleased as man with man to dwell,
Jesus, our Emmanuel.

Chorus

Mild He lays His glory by,
Born that man no more may die,
Born to raise the sons of earth,
Born to give them second birth.
Risen with healing in His wings,
Light and life to all He brings,
Hail, the Sun of Righteousness!
Hail, the heaven-born Prince of Peace!

About Hark! The Herald Angels Sing

Charles Wesley, brother of John Wesley, the founder of Methodism, wrote the words in 1739. His first line was Hark how all the welkin rings, welkin being an old word for the sky. The preacher George Whitefield changed it to the line we know in 1753.

The music comes from a cantata Felix Mendelssohn wrote in 1840 to mark the anniversary of Gutenberg's printing press. In 1855 the English musician William Hayman Cummings fitted Wesley's words to the tune, and the pairing has stuck ever since.

Hark! The Herald Angels Sing is traditional and out of copyright, so the words are free to print and sing at school, at church or at home. For printable sheets, download our free carols and activities pack (PDF).
