The words

Traditional Slow

O holy night! The stars are brightly shining,
It is the night of the dear Saviour's birth.
Long lay the world in sin and error pining,
Till He appeared and the soul felt its worth.
A thrill of hope, the weary world rejoices,
For yonder breaks a new and glorious morn.

Fall on your knees! Oh, hear the angel voices!
O night divine, O night when Christ was born!
O night, O holy night, O night divine!

Led by the light of faith serenely beaming,
With glowing hearts by His cradle we stand.
So led by light of a star sweetly gleaming,
Here came the Wise Men from Orient land.
The King of Kings lay thus in lowly manger,
In all our trials born to be our friend.

Fall on your knees! Oh, hear the angel voices!
O night divine, O night when Christ was born!
O night, O holy night, O night divine!

About O Holy Night

O Holy Night started life in France as Minuit, chrรฉtiens, a poem by Placide Cappeau, a wine merchant and poet from Roquemaure. The composer Adolphe Adam, best known for the ballet Giselle, set it to music in 1847.

The English version was written by John Sullivan Dwight, an American music critic, in 1855. Its soaring final lines make it a favourite for soloists and choirs at midnight services.

O Holy Night is traditional and out of copyright, so the words are free to print and sing at school, at church or at home. For printable sheets, download our free carols and activities pack (PDF).
