The words

Traditional Slow

O little town of Bethlehem,
How still we see thee lie!
Above thy deep and dreamless sleep
The silent stars go by.
Yet in thy dark streets shineth
The everlasting Light;
The hopes and fears of all the years
Are met in thee tonight.

For Christ is born of Mary,
And gathered all above,
While mortals sleep, the angels keep
Their watch of wondering love.
O morning stars, together
Proclaim the holy birth!
And praises sing to God the King,
And peace to men on earth.

O holy Child of Bethlehem,
Descend to us, we pray;
Cast out our sin, and enter in,
Be born in us today.
We hear the Christmas angels
The great glad tidings tell;
O come to us, abide with us,
Our Lord Emmanuel!

About O Little Town of Bethlehem

Phillips Brooks, a priest in Philadelphia, wrote the words in 1868 for the children of his Sunday school, a few years after he had visited Bethlehem on horseback at Christmas 1865. His organist, Lewis Redner, wrote the tune used in America.

In Britain it is usually sung to Forest Green, an English folk tune that Ralph Vaughan Williams arranged for the English Hymnal in 1906.

O Little Town of Bethlehem is traditional and out of copyright, so the words are free to print and sing at school, at church or at home. For printable sheets, download our free carols and activities pack (PDF).
